Modest Wedding Guest Dresses: What to Wear This Season

Milano Dramatic A-Line Maxi, a modest long sleeve wedding guest gown by Aleeza Paris

Wedding season always seems to arrive all at once. One invitation becomes four, and suddenly you need a dress for an evening chuppah, a winter simcha and a sheva brachos the week after. If you dress modestly, the search can feel harder than it should be. Most "wedding guest" edits are full of open backs, thin straps and short hemlines.

It doesn't have to be that way. A modest wedding guest dress can be the most elegant one in the room. Here is how we think about it, from the basics to the dress code, so you can shop once and feel right at every celebration.

The modest wedding guest checklist

Before you fall for a color or a print, check four things:

  • Sleeves. Elbow-length or longer is the standard for most modest dress codes. Long sleeves are the easiest choice for evening weddings and colder months, and they photograph beautifully.
  • Neckline. Look for a neckline that sits at or near the collarbone. A high collar, mock neck or gathered neckline looks polished without extra layers.
  • Length. Midi and maxi lengths work for almost every wedding. If you're between sizes in length, choose the longer option so you're covered when you sit and dance.
  • Fabric. Choose something with weight and drape: satin, structured knits, crepe and lined lace. They hold their shape through a long night and don't cling.

If a dress passes all four, you can focus on the fun part: color, texture and the details that make it yours.

What to wear to a Jewish wedding as a guest

Many of our customers ask what to wear to a Jewish wedding, especially an Orthodox or Chassidish one. Every family is different, but a few guidelines hold almost everywhere:

  • Cover up thoughtfully. Sleeves past the elbow, a neckline at the collarbone and a hem below the knee are the norm. A maxi dress or a midi with a long skirt is always safe.
  • Leave white to the bride. Ivory and very pale cream are best avoided too. Black, navy, jewel tones and soft pastels are all popular choices.
  • Dress for the dancing. At most Jewish weddings the dancing is long and joyful. Pick a dress you can actually move in, with a little stretch or a skirt that swings.
  • Think about the timeline. The chuppah may be outdoors and the reception indoors. A dress that works with a jacket or wrap takes you through both.

When in doubt, it's never wrong to dress up a little more rather than less. A beautiful long sleeve dress is the most versatile thing you can own for wedding season.

Black tie and evening weddings

For an evening wedding, go long and let the fabric do the work. The Milano Dramatic A-Line Maxi is a true statement piece: a pointed collar, a clean button placket, long sleeves and a full, flowing skirt that moves with you on the dance floor.

If you prefer something sleek, the High-Neck Draped Dress has a high collar, fitted long sleeves and a sweeping skirt in a soft, stretchy modal blend, so it is as comfortable as it is striking. Browse more long silhouettes in our Modest Long Sleeve Maxi Gowns and Modest Evening Dresses.

Semi-formal and cocktail

For a wedding that's dressy but not black tie, a rich fabric in a midi or longer length is perfect. The Classique Dress has a satin finish, a gathered neckline and gold buttons. It comes in two lengths and in sizes XS to 4X, so it's easy to get the fit right.

Lace is another lovely option. The Valerie Textured Lace Dress pairs a structured bodice with a column skirt and long sleeves that end in scalloped cuffs, in classic black or white (save the white for a party that isn't a wedding).

Daytime weddings, vorts and sheva brachos

Daytime celebrations call for something a little softer. Structured knit dresses are our favorite here: they look tailored, travel well and never need ironing. The Naava Dress combines long sleeves, a gold-tone front zipper and a finely pleated hem in pastel shades with ivory trim. For a fresh color, the Rhoda Knit Dress has gold-toned buttons and half sleeves in mint and apple green.

Fall and winter weddings

Cold-weather weddings are the easiest time to dress modestly, and the best time to play with texture. Choose deeper colors like brown, navy, burgundy or forest green, and heavier fabrics like satin and knit. A long sleeve dress plus a cape or tailored jacket keeps you warm between the car and the hall. The Noelle Belted Cape Jacket slips over a dress without crushing the sleeves.

Finding the right fit, in every size

The right dress is the one that fits well. Many of our evening and knit styles run from XS to 1X, and our Plus Size collection carries modest dresses and sets in extended sizes. If you're near Monsey or Linden, come try styles on in store. Our team loves helping with wedding season looks, from the dress to the layers.

Quick tips before the wedding

  • Order early so there's time for an exchange or a hem.
  • Try the dress on with the shoes and tights you'll actually wear.
  • Sit, walk and lift your arms in it. If it pulls, size up.
  • Pack a light layer. Halls are often cold, even in summer.
